For over 120 years Carlsbad, California has been known for water. The North San Diego beach city is named for the popular 19th century Karlsbad Spa in Europe. When sea captain, John Frazier, drilled and struck water in 1885, the artesian well appeared to have similar chemical properties to the famous Well Number Nine in the Karlsbad Bohemia Spas in Europe. This critical water discovery became the basis for growth, tourism and the formation of the  Carlsbad Land and Water Company. What a relief! Coming out of the severe drought from 1869 to 1872, water could secure the town’s economic future.

Today water plays an important role in Carlsbad’s seaside tourist mecca status. It is home to world class spa resorts, Omni La Costa Resort & Spa and Park Hyatt Aviara Resort, and it offers families water-themed vacations at Legoland California with Sea Life Aquarium and Chima Water Park. It  is also slated to open the $1 billion Carlsbad Desalination Project in 2016, providing 50 million gallons of drinking water per day to the region.
