Cucurbita, a genus in the gourd family, includes five species variously known as squash, pumpkin, or gourd. Mostly grown for their fruit, they have also become cultural object d’art featured at autum festivals and shows.
This weekend it’s pumpkin season at the Glass Pumpkin Patch of Carmel on Sept. 19 & 20, 2015. At this outdoor show the public can browse for unique, one-of-a-kind pumpkin-shaped glass objects to purchase and take home. Around the same time as the glass pumpkin patches are the gourd festivals. There are actually more people involved in gourd art than glass pumpkins, and many are members of societies throughout California and the U.S. who gather to show their works of gourd art in competitions and sales events. This weekend the public can attend Gourdstock on Sept. 19 & 20 at Bates Nut Farm in Valley Center.
