Cement Ship Flips

APTOS, CALIF. — It’s not easy to flip tons of cement — but that’s just what happened on Jan. 21, 2017, when the stern of the S.S. Palo Alto at the end of a fishing pier at Rio del Mar Beach in Aptos took its final bow.  With record-setting waves peaking at 34-feet in the Monterey Bay the strength of the current was too much for this old ship built 100 years ago in 1917.

Designed for WWI wartime use as a tanker, the Palo Alto wasn’t finished before the war’s end.  She was eventually towed from Oakland to Seacliff where the pier was built to access what was planned to be an amusement attraction. It lasted only several years, then folded. The Great Depression and WWII were on the horizon…
