Chanukah, also spelled as Hanukkah, is an eight day Jewish festival of lights celebrating the triumph of light over darkness. At the heart of Chanukah is the nightly menorah (candelabrum) lighting: a single flame on the first night, two on the second evening, and so on till the eighth night of Chanukah, when all eight lights are kindled. In California there are many public Menorah Lightings this year taking place several days before the Christian holiday, Christmas.
