Cities that Smoke in California
It’s smoking season, as in BBQ — and dozens of cities are lighting up by hosting California BBQ festivals. This weekend if you have a burning passion for barbeque head for Norco, Eureka or Milpitas. They are just a few of the cities with festivals dedicated to tasty beef, chicken and pork cooked over the intoxicating flames spiked with hints of oak, mesquite and hickory. Yum! While the prize money may be incentive for a competitor (can win up to $100,000 in the big events,) that’s not usually the motivation for entering a BBQ contest. Oftentimes the contestants barely break even. If they’re in the business of catering and/or they own restaurants the trophies are reward enough. At serious BBQ events the contestants place their trophies out where the public can see them. They use these awards as advertisement to get the public to pick their booth and food over another contestant’s offerings. The top California BBQ’ers as of May 19, 2015 are:
