An Abraham Lincoln impersonator recites the Gettysburg Address, and the war rages on at a Labor Day Weekend Civil War Days festival in Huntington Beach, California. Celebrating the 150th anniversary of the pivotal battle that helped shaped the nation, Civil War aficionados participated in mock battles accompanied by cannon shots,  rifle volleys and audience applause.  Over 100 Civil War re-enactors attend the annual event in Huntington Central Park, considered the largest such event in the state and one of the few offering free admission to the public.  Here is coverage from a previous year, and some highlights of this year’s event held August 30-31, 2014:

  • Barn dance on Saturday night with old-time fiddles & banjo accompaniment
  • 4 mock battles with the cannon’s thunderous boom echoing throughout the quiet rooms of nearby Central Library
  • Little girls in long dresses and bonnets, little boys with toy guns
  • Famed silhouette artist from Disneyland, Bob Carlson
  • Vendors selling unique civil war themed memorabilia
  • Old-fashioned church service
  • An absence of cell phones, smart phones, computers, cell towers, telephone wires and similar modern day conveniences in an effort to keep it authentic
