The City of Coalinga, Calif. is known for an earthquake, agriculture, oil and incarceration.  But one of its oldest, fondest traditions on Memorial Weekend is jumping with action. It’s the old-fashioned way of honoring those who serve, and celebrating the best of life in a Fresno County town where up to 15,000 people have decided to stick around.  The Coalinga Chamber of Commerce does a bang up job of producing this shindig which includes dozens of bands and entertainment, and welcomes tourists by the thousands.

Horned Toad Derby

  • Horned Toad Races
  • a parade
  • carnival
  • concerts
  • old-fashioned games
  • sack races
  • egg toss
  • bicycle races
  • water balloon toss
  • whiskerino (best beard or moustache)
  • Coaling Firemen’s Water Fights
  • Pancake Breakfast
  • Veteran’s Ceremony on Memorial Day

TIP

  • The horned toad is neither a toad nor a frog–-it’s really a horned lizard. The popular names come from the lizard’s round body and blunt snout, which make it resemble a toad or frog. While this weekend’s Jumping Frog Jubilee expects plenty of jumping, literally, the Horned Toad Derby is figuratively jumping with excitement as competitors hope their horned toads move fast on all fours.
