Cultural Soup of Festivals

Can you imagine that in a single weekend you can travel the globe and experience the dances and songs of Sweden, Mexico, Russia, Polynesia, Greece and even some of America’s own cultural roots with Native American flutes and drums or Southern blues guitar strums? That’s California, man, and it’s all happening in a single weekend!

What’s shaking this week!

Kingsburg Swedish Festival May 16-18 includes music, dance, a parade and some delicious pea soup & pancakes, along with Swedish Smorgasbord and Crowning of the Swedish Queen.

Calexico Chamber of Commerce produces the annual Mariachi Festival Sin Fronteras May 15-18 Saturday night concert featuring Mariachi Garibaldi de Jaime Cuellar, Mariachi Estrellas de Chula Vista and more. (Mission San Juan Capistrano Mariachi Festival on the same weekend is sold out.)

Doheny Blues Festival in Dana Point features some smokin’ acts May 18-19 with John Mayall Band, Taj Mahal, Robert Cray Band and T-Bone Walker among the legends.

Susanville Indian Rancheria Powwow May 17-19 held in honor of our Ancestors, Elders and Veterans, for all of the sacrifices they made so that we may live, features honored guests from Washington, Oregon and Arizona.

Orange County Greek Festival in Anaheim and Oakland Greek Festival are both happening May 17-19. Opa!

Santa Fe Springs Heritage of Aloha Festival May 18-19 includes Hawaiian/Polynesian music along with Island food.

West Hollywood Russian Festival May 19 in Plummer Park celebrates the rich culture and heritage of the over 500,000 members of the Los Angeles region’s Russian speaking community.

The Long Beach LGBTQ community hosts its annual Pride Parade and Festival May 18-19.
