Near California City, Calif. is a barren looking land that the California state reptile, the desert tortoise, calls home.  Desert Tortoise Research Natural Area attracts tourists hoping to get a glimpse of these patient vegetarians existing on Earth almost unchanged for millions of years. Your best chance to see them is late February through April when desert tortoises come out of hibernation to eat, mate, and enjoy the temperate days before the scorching desert weather sets in for the summer. Desert tortoises hibernate or remain underground approx. 95% of the time which means it’s not a sure bet that you’ll spot one. You can, however, see someone dressed up in a turtle costume at the annual Tortoise Days Festival and Parade taking place on May 2-3, 2015 in California City, approx. 2 hours north of Los Angeles.
