CALIFORNIA CITY, CALIF. -- Take it easy--you'll live longer! Tortoise Days celebration includes an energetic & patriotic parade, carnival and musical entertainment. Sponsored by California City Chamber of Commerce this annual event shares the month of May with other great festivals such as Jumping Frog Jubilee in Calaveras County.
California City is surrounded by undeveloped desert, including a 25,000-acre Desert Tortoise Preserve administered by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM), located along a portion of the city's northeastern bounds in Kern County. Tortoises generally have the longest lifespan of any animal and symbolize longevity in Chinese culture. The oldest tortoise ever recorded was known to have lived between 1777 and May 19, 1965, at the age of 188! It died of natural causes.
