Distracted Driving Awareness Campaign

April 3, 8, 17, and 22, 2014 are dates earmarked for statewide enforcement in the California Highway Patrol annual campaign encouraging drivers to put down cell phones and focus on the road when they drive

Talking (and texting) points:

  • The CHP wrote 168,000 citations for handheld cell phone or texting violations in a recent year, and than 3,000 people were killed in distracted driving crashes.
  • Drivers who use hand-held devices are 4 times more likely to get into crashes serious enough to injure themselves.
  • Texting while driving can delay a driver’s reaction time just as severely as having a blood alcohol content of a legally drunk driver.
  • Sending or receiving a text takes a driver’s eyes from the road for an average of 4.6 seconds.
  • There is no difference in the risks between hands-free and hand-held cell phone conversation.  
  • Over  one-third of the brain’s functioning that should be on your driving moves over to cell phone talk.
