It used to be that you’d go to a zoo and wander around just looking at animals. Then you’d head home when you were done looking. How things have changed! Zoos have become entertainment centers celebrating major holidays with special events, and engaging the public in ways no one could have imagined. Most zoos in California keep active calendars of events with Halloween festivals and Trick or Treat one of their major red letter days.

Boos at Zoos in California

  • San Francisco Zoo: In addition to Boo at the Zoo Oct.28-29, 2017, Zootoberfest runs weekends Sept.16-Oct.29 with San Francisco’s largest hay maze, a 5,000-square-foot structure made from 600 bales of straw. Zoo Brew Haus pours a selection of brews, and there’s a full smorgasbord of German-inspired dishes, like beer-braised bratwurst with Guinness mustard and Sauerkraut, while a live band plays  European polka music.
  • San Diego’s SeaWorld Halloween Spooktacular goes weekends Sept.23-Oct.29
  • Los Angeles Zoo BOO, every day Oct.1-31, includes an all-new Nocturnal Adventure Maze for close and personal encounters with tarantulas, scorpions, snakes and more.
