TRUCKEE, CALIF. — An annual event takes place on Oct. 4 & 5, 2014, exploring a portion of the famed Donner Party trail in the Sierra mountains. On a special Donner Party Hike (donnerpartyhike.com ) historians guide you along the trail, discussing key moments in history relating to these rugged mountains. For those who don’t recall or haven’t heard about the Donner Party, the story is a sad one involving a cross-country journey by wagon train to settle in the promise land of California in the mid 1800’s. Of 81 men, women and children trapped in the mountains during an early winter snowfall, 36 died and 45 survived. From traveler Patrick Breen’s diary comes this alarming entry: “Mrs Murphy said here yesterday that thought she would Commence on Milt. & eat him. I dont that she has done so yet, it is distressing.”
