Beer sampling is a great social activity, especially when you’re standing at 6,200 feet elevation in the Sierra Nevada mountains at Squaw Valley, 5,100 feet in the San Bernardino mountain Village of Lake Arrowhead or 7,800 feet at Mammoth Lakes. While some may argue that the Central Valley or California beaches are equally elevating, there is nothing like the high altitude aroma of scented pines to accompany fresh brews. In August there are beer festivals in Mammoth, Lake Arrowhead and Squaw Valley, all great places to spend a summer vacation. In the fall June Lake (7,600 feet) celebrates with an annual beer festival in October, right around the time Big Bear Lake (6,700 feet) hosts the month-long Oktoberfest in a spectacular setting. Enjoy the beer while you can. Snow season is right around the bend and many will opt for something hot to drink when the mountains turn icy.
