May 16, 2014 was National Endangered Species Day, declared by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service as an annual event to recognize the conservation effort to protect the nation’s endangered species and their habitats. Now in its 41st year, the annual event typically takes stock of successes while daily efforts by California Department of Fish and Wildlife and the national government are geared toward improving the health of threatened and endangered species. California was one of the first states to enact statutes protecting threatened and endangered animal species in 1970 – the year of the first Earth Day.
