Exciting Times for Giants Fans

Published on: June 14, 2012

Shown are Matt Cain and Coit Tower, two San Francisco icons. Cain set history at AT&T Park on Wednesday, June 13, 2012, just three miles down the road from the famous  Coit Tower.

Sports fans in California have plenty to celebrate this week as L.A. Kings hockey team wins the Stanley Cup, and San Francisco Giants  Matt Cain scores a perfect game, the first in the ball team’s 129 year history (founded in 1883.)

Yesterday Cain threw 125 pitches, the most ever in a perfect game, and the Giants beat the Astros 10–0, making Cain’s the highest-scoring perfect game ever. Bay Area residents are stoked about “their” team. The Giants have won the most games of any team in the history of American baseball, and any North American professional sports team. They have won 21 National League pennants and appeared in 18 World Series competitions.

Recently in April 2012, Cain signed a five-year contract extension with the team he’s played for since 2005, and is guaranteed $112.5 million through 2017 with an option for 2018. The largest deal for a right-handed pitcher includes a $5 million signing bonus, and $20 million each season from 2013–17.
