Kids & adults love spring and summer when the winds are just right for flying kites. For years SeeCalifornia.com has promoted fun kite festivals–many much older than our site. Kite flying actually has been around as early as 200 B.C. when it was used by the Chinese to make measurements over walls as plans for enemy attacks.

In the 21st century there are companies such as Kitenergy touting  innovative renewable energy from high-altitude wind technology. They use the illustration of a high altitude kite to represent concepts.

Your attendance at a local kite festival or effort take the kids out for a play flying kites on a windy day seems whimsical. But kites actually have been employed through the centuries by adults for a variety of practical matters such as Ben Franklin’s kite experiment. In June 1752 he proved the electric nature of lightning by tying a key to a kite string, then flying a kite during a storm.
