Forgetting Can Be Unforgivable — or Funny

Scenario: HE forgets the wedding anniversary. Author C. MacDonald describes sitting next to a couple in a restaurant where the husband forgot the date. In real life this can be unforgivable. But in the field of entertainment it makes for great comedy when classic couples Lucy & Ricky (I LOVE LUCY) or Basil and Sibyl (FAWLTY TOWERS) turn the scenario on its heels to make you laugh.
- I LOVE LUCY: Frantic over having forgotten the date of their wedding anniversary, Ricky tells Lucy that he has a big party planned in a famous nightclub. He doesn’t tell her when it is, desperately wiring their marriage license bureau for the correct date. This episode is based on an actual surprise anniversary party that Desi Arnaz threw for Lucy.
- FAWLTY TOWERS: Outraged that Basil has forgotten their 15th wedding anniversary, Sybil leaves the hotel. But little does she know that Basil has indeed remembered and has invited some of their close friends to celebrate. How will Basil explain Sybil’s absence?
