If it’s not cold enough for you, then go ahead and “break the ice” during New Year’s 2017 polar plunges. Pictured are past events in San Pedro, Seal Beach, La Jolla, Venice and Huntington Beach. The biggest, oldest new year’s celebration is hosted by Cabrillo Beach Polar Bears in San Pedro on January 1, 2017. San Francisco Dolphin Club is a much older swim club (founded in 1877) but their annual New Year’s Day Alcatraz Swim is a qualifying event not open to those who just show up. However, there is a Polar Plunge the public is invited to participate in at Ocean Beach in San Francisco on Jan. 1.

2017 list of Polar Plunges, swims & dips

  • Some plunges are free, and some charge a fee.
  • If it rains there’s a 24-72 hour alert to avoid swimming in the ocean and lakes.
  • The average temperatures in the Pacific range from 52 to 59 degrees.
  • Costume contests and other fun events are often part of plunge celebrations.
