California’s Free Symphonies

  • Redlands Bowl (left) offers one of the best, free symphony seasons under the Southern California skies. The festival of classical, patriotic and Broadway music closes on August 19, 2016 with the 1812 Overture and Fireworks.
  • Redwood City hosts many free summer concerts, including symphony on the Courthouse Square. This year Redwood Symphony (2nd photo-left) on June 18 presents William Tell Overture (excerpt), music from movie composers James Horner and John Williams, the opening movement of Beethoven Fifth, and Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture!
  • Costa Mesa’s Pacific Symphony (3rd photo from left) on June 4 hosts the free Plazacast and Community Festival on the Arts Plaza at Segerstrom Center for the Arts. Enjoy food trucks and performances by community ensembles, followed by a live simulcast of the evening’s performance in the concert hall. Projected onto the wall of the plaza guests watch Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 4 featuring André Watts, plus Berlioz’ Symphonie Fantastique. See pacificsymphony.org
  • Elk Grove Strauss Festival July 28-31 is a free, annual staged event featuring a 32-piece orchestra and spectacular dancers (right photo). Each performance ends with a fireworks display.
