Shark-Free Festivals Launch California Summer

A swimmer attacked and injured, most likely by a shark, on Memorial Weekend in Corona del Mar resulted in local beach closures. Shark attacks are rare — millions of visitors enter the Pacific Ocean in California each summer weekend taking home nothing more than annoying sunburns and sand in their shoes. If you’re brave enough to overcome your fears swim with leopard sharks in San Diego!

For the scaredy cats among us there are many festivals and events to launch summer, minus shark encounters:

  • APPLE VALLEY: Water Festival June 4 Civic Center Park Aquatic Center
  • CALIFORNIA: 18 Waterparks officially open for summer
  • CALIFORNIA BEACHES: Grunion Run June 5-8
  • CORONA DEL MAR: Balboa Wooden Boat Festival June 4
  • LAKEPORT: Wood & Glory Boat Show June 4-5
  • LODI: Youth Fishing Day at Lodi Lake
  • LONG BEACH: Scuba Show June 4-5 Convention Center
  • LONG BEACH: Pacific Island Festival June 4-5 at Aquarium of the Pacific
  • MARINA DEL REY: Marina Fest June 4-5 Burton Chace Park
  • PETALUMA: Day on the River June 5
  • TWO HARBORS: Summer Wine Festival June 4
