Retailers Shop-timistic this Halloween 2017

It’s not enough to dress yourself, your kids and pets this Halloween. Now you must also get your scarecrows suited in appropriate costumes for the season. Scarecrows festivals are part of the growing trend to make Halloween bigger, better and last longer than ever!

Retailers have been kind of in a slump, but the good news is…. this year consumers are expected to spend $9.1 billion on Halloween, up from $8.4 billion in 2016. Shopping isn’t dead and Amazon has not put retailers completely out of business, especially when it comes to shopping for costumes and candy (crowd cheers!) — Statistics provided by National Retail Federation

  • Discount store 47.1%
  • Halloween store 37.5%
  • Grocery store 25.4%
  • Department store 24.4%
  • Online 22.3%
  • Craft or fabrics store 13.7%
  • Clothing store 11.1%
  • Home décor store 10.8%
  • Thrift/resale store 10.8%
  • Drug store 9.1%
  • Greeting card/gift store 8.5%
  • Local/small business 7.2%
  • Home improvement store 6.2%
  • Catalog 3.9%

COSTUMES

  • 48% of adults plan to dress in costume this year, breaking records for participation. 5.8 million  dress like a witch, 3.2 million are Batman characters, 3 million wear animal costumes, and 2.8 million dress like a pirate in 2017.
  • 3.7 million children choose action character or superhero
  • 2.9 million select Batman characters
  • 2.9 million kids dress like a princess
  • 2.2 million will dress as a cat, dog, monkey or other animal
  • Pet costumes: 10% pumpkin costume,  7%  hot dog,  4% dog, lion or pirate

TRIVIA:  Last year Donald Trump costume outsold Hillary Clinton 4 to 1. The best-selling presidential candidate costume has accurately predicted the U.S. president for decades.
