Embassy Suites Mandalay Beach in Oxnard, Calif. continues to be one of our favorite beach resorts among many due to its price.  Its location approx. one hour north of Los Angeles gives you the feeling that you’ve escaped the big city with something akin to California’s version of a Hawaiian resort. Among the things to do, in addition to sipping cocktails by the pool next to the Pacific Ocean, you can take a day trip to the Channel Islands to explore the rugged beauty of these national treasures.

This weekend in neighboring Ventura the Street Painting Festival takes place Sept. 13-14, 2014 at the Ventura Harbor.  Next weekend is the California Beer Festival Sept. 19-21. If you’d rather find a beach hotel closer to the Bay Area, Pacifica’s Best Western Lighthouse Hotel directly on the beach offers a similar price range.
