MISSION SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO, CALIF. — The biggest hug any California mission ever had set a world record on September 13, 2014. Over 1,000 volunteers joined hands around the perimeter of the 11 acre mission, inspired by the 125th birthday of Orange County this year.  Participants and county residents received free admission to the historic landmark considered the birthplace of Orange County. Founded in 1776 by the Spanish Father Junipero Serra as the seventh in a chain of 21 missions, it operates as a museum for the public to visit, learn about the mission era and participate in fun events throughout the year. It has become popularly recognized for “the return of the swallows” each spring.
