Some hail this home and property as San Diego’s most significant, architecturally speaking. The private residence of still active artist James Hubbell, 81, and his wife, Anne, opens its door only a few times each year for the public to see.  The Hubbell House or Ilan-Lael (“The Place”) features sloped roofs and artistic treatments designed to blend with nature and the surrounding landscape, much like the intriguing chapel at The Sea Ranch. The house was built in 1958 with 40 acres or grounds filled with unique structures and art near Santa Ysabel.

Group tours are available during the spring and fall on a limited basis and by appointment only, while the Autumn Tour Day for Groups of 10 or more persons takes place on Saturday, October 19, 2013. Cost: $50 per person, reservations required. Call (760) 765-3427, ilanlaelfoundation.org
