Ancient Greeks and Romans ate pancakes sweetened with honey; Elizabethans flavored them with spices, sherry, and apples; Americans like butter and syrup.
Thomas Jefferson, the primary author of the Declaration of Independence, was fond of pancakes. We’re not sure if he ate a stack to celebrate the ratification of the Declaration by Congress on July 4, 1776, but a humorous and thought provoking account of the creation of The Declaration of Independence and how our nation came to be is presented on July 1, 2017 at the International Printing Museum in Carson, Calif. The Independence Day Celebration serves American apple pie and Colonial punch.
241 years have passed since the founding of the U.S. and some things haven’t changed much. Citizens still marvel at icons such as the free-to-see replica Independence Hall at Knott’s Berry Farm. It includes the Assembly Room in which the United States Declaration of Independence and Constitution were drafted and signed in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
On Independence Day, people also light fireworks, have parades and host pancake breakfasts–see our list. This year as you dive into stacks of hot, tasty flapjacks, send out a “thanks” to Thomas Jefferson. He loved pancakes.
