This week in Berkeley the public is invited to the free, annual Persian New Year Festival. Guests are invited to symbolically burn or throw away the bad, the past, sickness, and hatred, welcoming the brightness of Spring, by taking part in the traditional Jump Over the Bonfire exercise (kids do it, too!) While Jump Over events are held at California beaches where bonfires are permitted, Berkeley may be the only city in the U.S. to close off a public street for the annual fire jumping festival. The family-friendly street party sponsored by the Persian Center is part of a global celebration, Chahar Shanbeh Suri. Berkeley’s party takes place March 17, 2015, 6-10 p.m. Food vendors on hand may sell favorite dishes: kebabs, osh (bean and noodle soup) and ajeel, a mixture of seven dried fruits and unsalted nuts.
