June Mountain – One Heck of a Ride!

First they celebrated 50 years of skiing back in 2011; then June Mountain mourned its ski slopes closing for the 2012 ski season. On lucky Friday the 13th, June Mountain opens again for the 2013 season! What a wild and unpredictable ride!

Owned by Mammoth Mountain, the smaller June Mountain resort has operated at a deficit, so a business decision was made to shutter its ski facilities last year to save money. Can you imagine the impact to businesses such as hotels, rentals and restaurants built around an attraction that isn’t happening? It was pretty devastating, according to local business owners. In 2012 they rallied to create June Lake Winter Festival with cross-country skiing, sledding, snowmen sculptures and family fun, hoping to fill the empty hotel rooms and recreate the town as a winter destination filled everything but skiing.

IF you go, the first day of skiing is December 13, 2013. Tickets for the first day are only $10, and kids under 12 ski free this year.
