Lively California Grape Stomps

San Jose’s Italian Festa Grape Stomp on the weekend of August 23-24, 2014 is hilarious. Last year it included a reenactment of the famous I LOVE LUCY episode in which Lucy studies for a movie part by attempting to get a job stomping grapes at an Italian winery. As usual, she finds herself in more of a sticky situation than anticipated.

California has over 20 grapes stomps–there actually may be as many as 50 but we haven’t uncovered all of them as of yet. The stomp season typically happens around the time of harvest of the wine grapes. The stomp is merely fun and symbolic. Health laws prohibit wineries from actually using the juice pressed by human feet. It’s just a kick getting your feet wet and having a good time feeling what it was like to make wine back in the early days before machines did most the work. Here are some fun grape stomping events to attend.
