Lost Coast Celebration

The concept of a Lost Coast in California is intriguing. Surely every inch of coastline has photographed and posted to social networks so that there’s nothing lost anymore. In Northern California the Lost Coast is well known and frequented by locals who can spare a few days to get lost. Shelter Cove, the only settlement on the Lost Coast, began officially in the spring of 1965 as the State of California’s first resort improvement district. It’s a designation of one–there is no other RID in California. Town founders built homes, a greenbelt and an airstrip, and five decades later, this enclave of boutique inns, vacation homes, fishing boats and curio shops is the primary gateway to the wildest coastline in the continental United States, known as the Lost Coast.
