I’m sure you must have done something interesting this past Sunday. Our family was determined to NOT sit around the house so we found two unique museums to visit–one focused on the Pacific Island cultures, and another on Latin American Art. Since the Museum of Latin American Art (MOLAA) in Long Beach, Calif. has free admission on Target Sundays, we picked it. (The museum also participates in Smithsonian’s free museum admission day.) What we didn’t know till we arrived was that a large portion of exhibit space was dedicated to lucha libra or Mexican wrestling. Entrenched within pop culture since the 1930s, lucha libre has become for Mexicans an obsession harkening back to gladiator battles and Aztec warriors. Images from the Photography Collection of Fundacion Televisa comprise  Katharsis, which is divided into themes: Rituals; The Mask; Ladies of the Ring; Santo: The Silver Masked Man; and Society of the Spectacle, a documentary. To complete the art show which runs through September 15, 2013 a reception featuring live Mexican lucha libra takes place in the museum’s outdoor gardens. See molaa.org
