Marineland of the Pacific Gone but not Forgotten!

Published on: March 24, 2012

Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.–It’s been over 25 years since the Southern California tourist attraction, Marineland of the Pacific, abruptly shut down after providing entertainment and education about sea life and the ocean  for more than 30 years. It was the biggest oceanarium for its time, and appeared in a number of black & white and color TV shows such as Beverly Hillbillies.

Those who can remember and had the pleasure of visiting the theme park that required driving down a challenging road to access, still talk about the fun they had. So much talk continues, in fact, that a nonprofit group (marineland of the pacific.org)  formed to archive and distribute information about the once successful theme park where Terrenea Resort now stands, overlooking the Pacific Ocean.

For a stroll down memory lane or a visit that the kids seem to really enjoy, Point Vicente Interpretive Center contains an entire room of displays from Marineland. Coloring books, games, cards, cups, t-shirts, hats, embroidered pillows and little coin purses all are souvenirs that have been preserved and are on display.  There’s an original dolphin display and the announcement marque with show times for marine acts that included Bubbles the Whale, Orky the Killer Whale in the Killer Whale Coliseum, Sea & Dolphin Circus in the Sea Arena, and a Diver Show in the Giant Fish Tank.

Opened in August 1954, Marineland of the Pacific was located on 90 acres adjacent to the ocean on the Palos Verdes Peninsula in L.A. County.  From 1954 to 1987 Marineland entertained and educated hundreds of thousands of visitors who could learn about the Pacific Ocean.  SeaWorld San Diego owners moved the popular killer whales and other animals to their San Diego facility and abruptly closed Marineland.
