Meet the Grunion

‘Meet the Grunion’ is like a flashlight Easter Egg Hunt but this event is REAL Mother Nature at work, doing her thing. On select nights in San Pedro, Calif. the annual program at Cabrillo Aquarium invites the public to come and learn about these fascinating silversides. For a small fee ($1-5 approx.) Grunion Greeters discuss the unique fish that come to the beach and dig into the sand to spawn (lay eggs). Unlike an Easter Egg hunt you are not looking for the tiny eggs but instead, are looking for the grunion. For those with a fishing license there’s a grunion open catch season — but it comes with a catch. You may only catch them with your bare hands! All along the California coast between San Diego and the Central Coast the grunion are running — and so are people hoping to see them.
