Meet the Grunion

They’re silver, they’re slimy to touch, and they wiggle on the beach a lot. Humans LOVE the Grunion. So much fascination surrounds the little fish that come to spawn on California’s beaches that Cabrillo Marine Aquarium has spent decades studying grunion, hosting grunion talks and walking people out to the beach to meet them. Grunion season starts in March (that’s when the fish arrive on the beach) but includes times when you’re allowed to catch them with your bare hands (with a fishing license) and times when they’re totally off limits and you’ll be fined. Leave the guess work up to the experts who invite you to “Meet the Grunion”. There’s also a Grunion Fishtival in May.
