Families Celebrate Memorial Day

This week the Field of Honor community-sponsored flags were placed on a hilltop overlooking the Newport Harbor in Newport Beach. Between May 19 and 29, 2017 the public is invited to a free, awesome display of patriotism honoring those who have passed. Families buy flags and take their kids to proudly stand by a purchased flag honoring a brother, sister, father or grandparent who served in the United States military.

In Torrance this weekend  (May 19-21)  the annual Armed Forces Day similarly pays homage to the sacrifices of our nation’s military. Torrance is one of few cities nationwide sanctioned by the Department of Defense to honor our Armed Forces through an annual Armed Forces Day & Parade Celebration.

Memorial Day is a United States federal holiday observed on the last Monday of May (May 29 in 2017). Formerly known as Decoration Day, it commemorates U.S. Service Members who died while on active duty. First enacted to honor Union and Confederate soldiers following the American Civil War, it was extended after World War I to honor Americans who have died in all wars.

California has nine national cemeteries, all holding moving tributes on or around Memorial Day 2017.  In addition, nearly every city in California hosts some sort of Memorial Day Ceremony.
