Just mention the word “jellyfish” and people ooh and ahh. Ever since its opening in 1984 Monterey Bay Aquarium has developed a worldwide reputation for its displays–the graceful jellyfish (shown in photos) have always been among the favorites. If you want your own personal encounter with this drifter of the sea, the spineless, heartless creature with no brain can be seen hanging around eight great aquariums, including a new location at Legoland’s aquarium this spring!

Where to see jellyfish in California:

  • CARLSBAD – Sealife Aquarium announced it is opening a new jellyfish exhibit in Spring 2014. Their website says, “Stay tuned.”
  • LONG BEACH – Aquarium of the Pacific jellyfish aren’t going anywhere, thankfully!
  • MANHATTAN BEACH – Roundhouse Aquarium on the Pier boasts beautiful Moon Jellies in the blue port-hole tanks.
  • MONTEREY – Monterey Bay Aquarium is a jellyfish lover’s best friend.
  • SAN FRANCISCO – Aquarium of the Bay jellies exhibit features Moon Jellies and Pacific Sea Nettles.
  • SAN FRANCISCO – Steinhart Aquarium “Water Planet” gallery has Moon Jellies to mesmerize.
  • SAN PEDRO – Cabrillo Marine Aquarium has a jellyfish display with lighting that makes them seem purple. So nice!
  • SANTA BARBARA – Ty Warner Sea Center on Stearns Wharf is hosting an exhibit, “Jellies and Friends” through 2014.
