While our nation and world is focused on exploring the outer reaches of space, discoveries in the past month have shown us just how little we know about even the waters off the California coast!

For tourists it’s painfully clear. With calm waters and small swells lifeguards have been busy tending to stingray encounters in places such as Newport Beach, Huntington Beach, Seal Beach and Long Beach. A lifeguard in Huntington Beach said there have been large numbers of tourists getting stung. Learn about doing the Stingray Shuffle.

Meanwhile, researchers are doing the Nautilus shuffle on the ocean floor, filming unusual sea life such as a purple-colored species with large eyes found off Santa Monica. Part octopus, part squid, it lives on the seafloor, burrowed into the sand to camouflage itself while its big “googly” eyes spot incoming prey. Another recent find is a purple orb which unfolds two distinct lobes. It could be a new discovery as it remains unidentified for now. Follow the fascinating voyage of the E/V Nautilus as it travels the coast in search of the unknown! nautiluslive.org
