When the National Hotel opened in Jackson, California over 160 years ago, it provided state-of-the-art lodgings for its time. The California Gold Rush had created a flood of interest in the region, which diminished as gold lessened and travelers began opting for life and work in big cities such as growing Los Angeles, San Francisco and San Diego.

The hotel became just what you’d expect…old. It wasn’t necessarily by choice that the owner of the historic property pumped over $4 million into the recent renovation after a fire damaged the hotel. However, when you see it now, all you can say is WOW! The entire building was gutted while maintaining the legacy of its earlier self. During renovation artifacts uncovered included old safes, bottles and documents that have been preserved. Some of the furniture was refurbished, and the hotel retains lots of wood finishes, floors, and classic views of the little downtown area seen from 2nd floor balconies. For single travelers, there are actually twin bed rooms currently listed for under $100.  The rooms and suites include fine towels and linens, flat screen TVs, and Stanley Steakhouse is on site. Jackson is located 45 miles east of Sacramento and Stockton in the Sierra Nevada Foothills at around 1,500 elevation. It began as a gold mining camp in 1848 and was home to the Kennedy Gold Mine.
