Los Alamitos, a wonderful city in Orange County that DOESN’T have the race track next door named Los Alamitos Race Track,  is known maybe for the Joint Forces Training Base and its annual Wings, Wheels and Rotors festival. It also has a small but interesting history museum with some wonderfully, nice volunteers that run it. Inside you’ll find out that a few famous athletes and actors come from “Los Al”.

Marketers brainstormed and crafted a new festival launching on July 13, 2013,  the Los Alamitos Sugar Beet Festival. It is based on the city’s sugar beet history and factory established over 100 years ago. The sugar beet factory no longer exists, but who cares?  Neither does Historic Downtown Los Alamitos where this new event takes place. Promoters say:  “Yes, we know we don’t have one, but we’re going to create it!”

The inaugural event includes an obstacle course–Sugartown Challenge, lots of sugary foods such as Mustache Mike’s Italian Ice, and Tornado Potatoes food truck serving famous potatoes on a stick. If this sounds like something you can dig, head for the race track, but stop short the City of Cypress where the race course is, and go directly to Pine and Florista Streets in the City of Los Alamitos. The Elm Street Band and other musicians will perform there on the main stage throughout the day while you snack on sugar beet-laced foods. See sugarbeetfestival.com
