It’s a tradition for many to put on their swimsuits and head for the beach each January 1, regardless of the cold. Temperatures in the Pacific Ocean on New Year’s Day range from the low 50s to 60s, but that doesn’t stop brave souls from running directly into the frigid water. Some actually swim in the Pacific all year and are used to it.

Two of the oldest, easiest New Year’s Day swim events in which the public can attend are hosted by San Pedro Cabrillo Beach Polar Bears and La Jolla Cove Swim Club, while the oldest known California swim club is the Dolphin Club established in 1877. There’s not much fluff in that organization–they actually have an “Escape to Alcatraz” event! Their swims are geared toward those who can handle challenging currents and freezing temperatures.   Here’s our list of New Year’s swims!
