Is Open Streets Movement Sizzling or Fizzling?

On March 5, 2017 Los Angeles Metro hosts 626 Golden Streets, billed as the biggest Open Streets event ever to be held in North America. The public is invited to explore 17+ miles of car-free streets along Metro’s recently expanded Gold Line in parts of San Gabriel Valley northeast of Los Angeles (in the 626 area code.) That’s a sizzle! Los Angeles, Long Beach, Santa Barbara and San Francisco continue to promote the idea of ditching cars and playing in the streets through marketing and hosted events.  However, the open streets movement has seen some fizzles, as well.

Sizzle

  • Open street events and cicLavia continue — see list
  • Sunday Streets San Francisco Mission Mar. 12, 2017
  • cicLAvia Culver City meets Venice Mar. 26, 2017
  • City of Long Beach Open Street event April 29, 2017
  • Car Free initiative in Santa Barbara, San Francisco and San Luis Obispo

Fizzle

  • Open Streets Project (openstreetsproject.org) lists dozens of California participants. Be careful when clicking links such as San Mateo County’s Streets Alive website. As of Mar.3, 2017 the link led to an escort service website. Open Streets Project had no events listed on the 2017 calendar either.
