With Valentine’s Day quickly approaching, those short on gift ideas may want to check out the overlooked, but very unusual orchid as a gift. There are more than 25,000 types of orchids–they grow everywhere except for Antarctica, and there are so many things beguiling about them beyond their exotic looks. For example,  some orchids have bizarre pollination processes such as Lady’s Slipper which can trap insects and make them pollinate the flower, or the Austrian orchid, which grows underground and is pollinated by ants. One of California’s finest orchid festivals, Pacific Orchid Exposition, takes place at Fort Mason Pavilion in San Francisco Feb. 20-22, 2015. This weekend the Newport Harbor Orchid Society (nhos.org) hosts a free show at Westminster Mall in Westminster, Calif. Called Jewels of the Jungle, the expo takes place Feb. 13-15.
