It seems like there are a thousand bike festivals, marathon runs and triathlons each weekend in California–and maybe there are. If you find the multitude of sporting events overwhelming, dig deep into the personal stories that often drive them. It is there that you’ll uncover motivation, inspiration and passion.  For example: Eppie’s Great Race on July 19, 2014 is a “no swim” triathlon in which contestants paddle in the American River instead of swim. Founder Eppie Johnson had a passion for getting people out to enjoy the river he loved so dearly. Eppie passed away less than a year ago and will be honored at this Saturday’s annual race.

Example 2: Squaw Valley Wanderlust July 17-20, 2014 isn’t just about doing yoga in an incredible setting. The festival includes inspirational talks with a holistic approach to wellness and energy.

Example 3: San Diego’s Over the Line Tournament July 12 – 20, 2014 touts one of the last pure Southern California traditions left untouched by commercialism.

Example 4: Fall River Century and Tahoe Trail 100-Kilometer Race this weekend both include several thousand feet of mountain bike climbing. Participants have often invested large sums of time and energy to prepare for such races. The financial gain is minimal in most cases.
