Pier 39 Sea Lions Return

The annual, beloved Return of the Sea Lions to Pier 39 in San Francisco is celebrated in a festival held mid-January each year. The boisterous and entertaining pinnipeds first made the mass appearance shortly after the Loma Prieta earthquake in October 1989 and have been coming back each year since. Not everyone loves them — some locals with boats and yachts find them quite annoying and destructive. However, tourists go crazy over the noisy creatures. One of the most fun things to watch is how these big, heavy characters try to worm their way onto a dock already occupied by sleeping sea lions. They come out of the water and plop themselves on top of other sea lions or literally push them to move over. Sometimes an argument ensues, but usually the other sea lions accommodate the newcomers.  Be sure to catch the free walking tours during the “Return” celebration taking place Jan. 16-19, 2015.
