BLUE JAY, CALIF.– The next time you’re out in the woods keep your eyes open…you may find the record-breaking pine cone and if you do, you could be eligible for some great prizes! The annual Arrowhead Pine Cone Festival invites you to submit your best on October 11, 2014. The event includes pine cone crafts and contests, musical entertainment and the ever popular Pine Cone Olympics.

FACTS ABOUT PINE CONES:
1. The individual plates of a cone are known as scales.
2. The size and form of pine cones are important diagnostic features in species identification.
3. Pinus lambertiana, the famous Sugar Pine from California, can grow to 28 inches or longer.
4. The heaviest cone, another California native, Pinus coulteri or Coulter pine cone can weigh close to 5 lbs.
5. Being struck on the head by a falling Coulter cone is reputed to be a potentially fatal experience.
