If you’re a bee, today’s your special day to be honored for all your contributions to the human race.  In California bees are crucial to a variety of crops, but especially almonds and nuts. With threats to the bee population attributed to poisons being used on seeds and in the fields where food grows,  farmers are always keeping an eye on the availability of bees for pollination.

Bee facts:

1. There are three types of honey bees — The Queen, Workers (females) and Drones (males)

2. Queen lives 1-5 years, Workers live 1-4 months and Drones live 1-2 months

3. The Queen lays up to 1,500 eggs per day, and may lay up to 1 million in her lifetime.

4. Drones (males) sole purpose in life is to mate. They die after they fulfill that purpose.

5. An industrious Worker may visit up to 2,00 flowers in a day.
