Pony Express Days

Though the Pony Express was a short-lived venture in American history, it was one of the most famous, symbolizing the transformation of the untamed West. Like smart phones are today, the mail delivery between St. Joseph, Missouri and Sacramento, California suddenly created new possibilities in communication and commerce. Today we can connect to anyone anywhere in the world with just a tap but Pony Express’s 10 day mail delivery by horseback at the time seemed revolutionary. Riders such as Buffalo Bill (William Cody) who was 15 at the time he delivered mail on the Pony Express, took many risks. Here’s an ad calling for riders: “Wanted: Young, skinny, wiry fellows not over eighteen. Must be expert riders, willing to risk death daily. Orphans preferred.”

This weekend in McKinleyville (home to the World’s Tallest Totem Pole,) Pony Express Days arrives in town. It’s a big celebration and one that you won’t want to miss.
