Presidential Pardon

Presidential pardons are common place: Barack Obama has pardoned over 1,000 people during his term as president. The most pardons (7,000)  appear to have come from President Andrew Jackson in the aftermath of the Civil War. But one of the most publicized events is the pardoning of the White House Thanksgiving turkey — it hails from Iowa in 2016. Two turkeys from the Hawkeye State actually are on hand for the ceremony in what’s akin to extras in a movie. If one is not up to the event the other steps into the role.

What happens to the “extra”? Both turkeys retire to a Virginia Tech teaching farm after their White House duty ends. The average life expectancy of a male turkey is just over 2 years and just over 3 years for females. Domestic turkeys bred for food consumption were not bred to live over one year. Here’s a little info about turkeys in California.
