SELMA, CALIF. — The city that once called itself Home of the Peach and A Peach of a City is now the Raisin Capital of the World. It’s true that 90% of the raisins grown in the U.S. are within an 8 mile radius of Selma (and California produces 100% of U.S. raisins.)  Sandy soil, warm summer temperatures and irrigation utilizing snow-melt water from the nearby Sierra Nevada mountain range create the perfect conditions for grapes to thrive and become raisins. Celebrate raisins this weekend in Fresno County with the Selma Raisin Festival. The event features the crowning of a king or queen, a carnival, culinary events and a Raisin Fun Run on Saturday morning. The entire city is abuzz this week between April 29 and May 3 for the Selma Raisin Festival. If you miss this event, look for the Dinuba Raisin Festival in the fall.
