While many are consumed this week watching the Summer Olympic Games in Rio, there a “Rio” on California’s north coast focused on its own celebration, Wildwood Days. Rio Dell each year hosts a festival which includes a parade, car show and cruise, kids’ firetruck rides, BBQ, bands, chalk art, bocce, baseball, fun run,  firemen’s muster, electric lawn mower and motorcycle flat track races, and the new soap box derby.

Rio Dell is named for the Eel River which the city runs alongside (rio means river in Spanish.) With its roots in the lumber industry and surrounded by the world’s tallest redwood trees, Rio Dell is a beautiful city filled with people who appreciate the great outdoors, thus celebrating with a festival that takes advantage of the region’s sunniest season. If you’re looking for something low key and closer to home, head to California’s Rio this week to see its summer games.
